Newton back on song

Shaun Derry has set Conor Newton the challenge of keeping up the form he has shown for Cambridge United in their last two games.

The midfielder has been in and out of the side this season, but he returned to the starting line-up with a good performance against Wycombe Wanderers and then scored the winning goal against Notts County.

Newton is a doubt for tomorrow’s match with a hamstring problem that he suffered at Meadow Lane, and U’s boss Derry said: “I think it’s fair to say that we saw the Conor Newton that played in them early days when I first arrived.

“I thought he was a strong player for us last season in those first 10 games when I came to the club and then his injury came along and put him out for the rest of the season.

“He has never really recovered from that, and he’s become a certain bit part player that has only kind of sporadically pulled on the shirt for us.

“But I know he has got ability and he has proved that in the last two games. What Conor has got to do now is sustain that, he has got to continue to push himself to the boundaries that I expect all our players to do.

“When Conor Newton plays to the best of his ability, he is a good player and we want that to continue between now and the end of the season.”
