Carlisle United hitman makes switch to the U’s
Jabo Ibehre is aiming to boost Cambridge United’s firepower after becoming their second summer signing.
The 34-year-old striker has made the switch from Carlisle United, where he turned down the offer of a new contract having scored 31 goals in 84 appearances over two years.
Ibehre began his career at Leyton Orient and spent nine years there, making more than 200 appearances.
He has also played for MK Dons and Colchester United, and had loan spells at Southend United, Stockport County, Oldham Athletic and Barnsley.
“I’m over the moon to get the move to Cambridge United over the line and I’m already looking forward to pulling on my boots and getting back into training,” said Ibehre.
“I have been really impressed by all the people I have met from the club and when speaking to Shaun Derry there was a lot of positivity, so I want to be part of the club’s aims going forward.
“I can bring a lot of experience and I definitely still feel I have plenty of juice left in the tank.
“I love playing football and learning to get better each year, I always want to give more than I did in the previous season. Cambridge United is a great club to do exactly that at this point in my career.
“Hopefully there will be plenty of goals and success to follow and I can’t wait to get started again.”
Having also signed David Amoo last week, United head coach Shaun Derry is delighted to have Ibehre on board.
“Bringing Jabo to Cambridge United gives us a far greater goal threat going forward into the new season,” he said. “He has the capability to score varying types of goals as well as bringing a fantastic reputation with him.
“His leadership qualities were something we were looking for and we are delighted that he has chosen to sign here over numerous other options this summer.
“His career to date is very impressive and we’re sure that will continue at Cambridge United.”
And United’s head of football operations Ben Strang said: “Jabo brings a wealth of experience and a strong record, particularly over the last couple of seasons in our league.
“He will help the team with his game knowledge and understanding which will be hugely beneficial to the younger players in the group.
“Jabo’s signing improves the balance of the squad in terms of his profile, age and experience.
“He brings competition for places and undoubtedly strengthens our forward options.”
