U’s stars on the mend

Joe Dunne has praised the approach to their careers of Cambridge United’s senior players as they bid to get back to full fitness.

Leon Legge, Jabo Ibehre and Piero Mingoia have all had long spells on the sidelines, but the interim head coach has saluted their professionalism.

“First of all, what’s really evident for me now in the game is that when you look more at senior professionals their resilience and ability to adapt and change their lifestyle is great,” said Dunne.

“Leon shouldn’t be at the stage he is [in his recovery], but he is because of how he looks after himself and the work he has done with the medical team.

“Jabo is another example of that. It is a separate issue in terms of the problem he’s had, but I don’t think he’s played in 10 games, however from a peak [fitness] point of view, it’s fantastic.

“It’s the same with Piero, who is mid to late 20s and working on getting fit. They are getting back quicker than we would expect.”

Legge has been out with a shoulder injury, Ibehre has been absent through concussion and Mingoia has been struggling with a groin injury.

“Leon’s shoulder is improving because of the work he is doing so they may be available in the short distance rather than maybe writing them off for the rest of the season, which is great for the club and testament that they want to get back,” said Dunne.

“With Jabo, we feel we’re in a position now to be able to really test him which is good. The fact he looks after his body is important, as you do not have to spend so much time rehabbing and getting him up to the level of standard that is needed.

“We’re confident we’re in a position now to welcome him back into the group.”
