Star and champion of the month as hockey is in the spotlight

It has been a hugely successful time on the hockey pitches of the region this season.

The campaign, which culminated last week, saw Cambridge City be a force in the National Leagues, numerous Cambridge South and Cambridge Nomads teams earn titles and promotions, and The Perse and The Leys Schools reach their respective national finals.

So it only seems appropriate that hockey should fall under the spotlight this month in the Cambridge United Sport in the Community Awards, in partnership with the Cambridge Independent.

And with so much success, it is no surprise that it was extremely difficult for the judges to decide the champion and star of the month winners.

With so many strong contenders in both categories, it is Cambridge South’s Kim Cooil who is the star of the month and Cambridge City’s Mike Mitcham who is the champion of the month.

Cambridge United Community Trust manager Ben Szreter said: “The calibre of nominee came shining through this month, which just goes to show the strength of hockey in the region.

“With such a strong category, it was difficult to decide the winners so Kim and Mike should be congratulated on their achievements and efforts on and off the hockey pitch.”
