U’s are held at the Cambs Glass Stadium

Cambridge United fell to a late sucker punch as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Colchester United in Sky Bet League Two.

The U’s took the lead at the Cambs Glass Stadium in the 20th minute.

George Maris’ cross from the right was brought down by Gerry McDonagh, and the Nottingham Forest loanee smashed the ball home at the near post for his first Football League goal.

United thought they had doubled their lead in the 34th minute, with Harrison Dunk flicking Piero Mingoia’s cross past Sam Walker in the Colchester goal, but he was deemed to have been offside.

Colchester had the more of the ball at the start of the second half.

A superb save from Will Norris thwarted Colchester’s George Elokobi in the 73rd minute.

At the other end, McDonagh was denied by the feet of Walker.

But in the 84th minute, Colchester grabbed their equaliser.

Good work on the left by Ben Dickenson led to substitute Sammie Szmodics turning the ball home from close range to secure his side a share of the spoils.

The result sees the U’s remain 12th in the table.
