U’s keep up good form

Luke Berry scored twice as Cambridge United won 3-1 against Cheltenham Town to move within two points of the Sky Bet League Two play-off places.

The U’s took the lead in the sixth minute as Uche Ikpeazu’s effort wrong-footing Cheltenham keeper Russell Griffiths.

Nine minutes into the second half, Berry doubled the lead.

Left-back Greg Taylor sent in the cross which the midfielder met unchallenged to head past Griffiths.

United’s interlinking play caused Cheltenham problems all afternoon, and they increased their lead in the 74th minute.

Berry received a pass to fire in an angled drive for his 50th goal for the U’s.

Griffiths denied Ikpeazu a fourth goal for United, before Cheltenham grabbed a consolation through Billy Waters, who finished from close range after good work from Easah Suliman.

United are now 11th, just two points behind seventh-placed Blackpool.

“It was really important today that we backed up the performances of late,” said manager Shaun Derry. “I thought the performance levels were extremely high considering how many games we’ve played and we were pretty brutal and crucial in terms of taking our chances.

“We were very much on the front foot which is the way that I want us to play, I want us to play aggressive football, but I thought within that aggression we had a lot of quality.”
