Academy manager and first-team coach confirmed at the U’s

Tom Pell has been appointed Cambridge United’s academy manager.

The current professional phase lead coach will take over the academy as Mark Bonner has become a permanent coach with the first team.

Pell has been with the U’s since 2006, playing a key role in reforming the youth scheme.

During his 12 years, he has helped the development of the academy structure including its progression to Category 3 status.

“It was a unanimous and straightforward decision to promote Tom to the role of academy manager,” said United head of football Ben Strang.

“His commitment over almost 12 years to the club is unrivalled and as a result he fully embodies the values of Cambridge United.

“Having led each phase within the academy, Tom already has an extensive knowledge of the players without our system.

“Tom now has the ideal situation of leading an already thriving set-up, which is in no small part down to Mark Bonner’s outstanding leadership.”

Bonner first joined United in 2011 and has held a number of positions within the academy, managing it through two audits.

He became first-team coach in January to help the transition of players from the academy to the senior set-up, and since the departure of Shaun Derry, he has become interim assistant head coach.

“We must thank Mark for his dedication and relentless drive to improve the academy,” said Strang.

“He has been assisted by an outstanding group of staff in ensuring that we strive to compete above our natural level and continue to be an extremely well regarded Category 3 academy.

“Mark’s deserved recognition of a first-team coaching position now enables Tom with the opportunity to progress us further.

“We are excited to see the next stage of the academy as it continues to evolve.”
