New arrivals give U’s different choices

Shaun Derry has hinted that the greater depth in the Cambridge United squad could help evolve Luke Berry’s position in the team.

With the increased competition for places up front – with the arrivals of Jabo Ibehre, Ade Azeez and Jevani Brown – the U’s head coach has indicated that it will give him more options in the way the team is set up.

And that in turn could mean that the role of Berry, who was the United’s top scorer last season, could vary, rather than primarily being off a lone, central striker.

“We can play the two up the top with Luke in the No 10 position but I think those that went to watch us against Exeter last weekend saw him pop up in different positions,” said Derry.

“He is such a clever player. He finds space really well. He is a flexible, adaptable player as well and when you’re a good player and understand you’re a good player, I think whatever role I choose to pick him in, he can affect the game.

“That is brilliant for me because last year, like I said all along, I think if there was one criticism of our strength in depth is that we didn’t have that capability of pushing two centre forwards on to the pitch and still finding a role for Luke where we can maximise his ability.

“I think we can this year, and you’re going to see Luke pop up in various positions while he’s playing for us.”
