U’s head coach expecting tough clash

Shaun Derry is bracing his Cambridge United squad for a battle when they head to Mansfield in Sky Bet League Two tomorrow (September 23).

The sides have the same number of points in the table, with Mansfield two places higher in fifth by virtue of a better goal difference.

Mansfield are unbeaten in their last five league games, while United have only had one defeat in their last six games.

“Steve [Evans, the Mansfield manager] has recruited strongly over the summer,” said U’s head coach Derry. “He’s had a budget up there that allows him to get the best of not just League Two players but he has recruited from a higher level as well.

“It has been very well documented in the past that Mansfield have had new money come into the group, and they’ve spent it with Steve at the helm.

“They are on a good run of form themselves, level on points with us.

“I think with a manager like Steve, with the record that he’s got, you’re always going to be in a game against them.

“When they came down to the Cambs Glass last year, that was a difficult afternoon for us, and we ended up losing.

“We know what to expect. We know that when it comes to a Steve Evans team it’s going to be a real battle, and I think we’re prepared for that.

“I think anybody who talks about us would say the same, and I think it will be a tight game.

“Steve’s referenced us in his press conference this week to say that he thinks we are a good team, and I think we are ourselves! But I also think that Mansfield are a good team and they are one of the favourites to get promoted.

“We know that if we are to continue this good run of form, then we have to be right on top of our game. We have to be at our very best.”

Derry will be seeking a repeat of the impressive performance against Coventry City, when Jabo Ibehre and Uche Ikpeazu scored in a 2-1 victory at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

“I thought we were up against a really good team last Saturday and that should give a lot of confidence going into this game, recognising that we can beat one of the top teams in League Two, especially at home,” he said.

“Can we take that away from home and make a show of it this weekend?”
