U’s leave it late to stop losing run

Shaun Derry could not hide his delight after his Cambridge United side rescued a late point against Yeovil Town and ended a four-game losing streak in Sky Bet League Two.

It looked like it could be another miserable night for the U’s when Francois Zoko gave the Glovers the lead at Huish Park on 78 minutes, but Barry Corr netted the equaliser in the 89th minute for his first goal since coming back from a 13-month injury.

“It wasn’t going to be easy tonight. On the back of four losses the important thing for us tonight is we had to stop the rot. It’s as simple as that,” Derry said.

“This [Yeovil] is a football club that was in the Championship only a few years ago. I know they’ve had some sort of decline but they’ve got a spirit and belief.

“It was a hard game. When Yeovil took the lead with just over 10 minutes to go, a lot of teams wouldn’t have come back from that. Especially with the journey we’ve been on over the last month. I’m so happy. I’m as happy with that point as I am with any win this season.”

As for Corr, it was almost as if it was written that the striker would be the hero for United as in only his second appearance since making his comeback he bagged the equaliser as a second-half substitute.

“It just felt right. We were looking at that sub and then they scored the goal. If he had come on at 0-0 we would have perhaps gone on to win the game,” Derry continued.

“He’s a goal-scorer and for 14 months we’ve been without our most potent goal-scorer and it’s been a big loss to us.

“It’s going to take time because his recovery is taking place on the front line. We want as many goal-scorers available in our squad and that’s why we’ve got him back.”
