U’s suffer bad day at the office

Shaun Derry felt Cambridge United were a shadow of their defensive selves as they lost 5-2 at Forest Green Rovers in Sky Bet League Two.

George Maris had given the U’s the lead after three minutes, Christian Doidge equalised for Forest Green after 18 minutes, but Medy Elito restored United’s advantage seven minutes later.

However, Dayle Grub made it 2-2 before half time, and late goals from Doidge, Grub and Tahvon Campbell condemned United to defeat.

“On the afternoon, I thought it was a wide open game in the first half,” said U’s head coach Derry. “It was a game where I thought we played on the front foot and got into some good areas and the goals we scored were good, well-developed goals.

“The goals we conceded were terrible. You go into half time at 2-2 and you try to steady yourselves defensively.

“We’ve been very good this season defensively, very, very good. We could take a lot of confidence from that at half time and spoke about the amount of clean sheets we’ve had.

“I thought we started the second half on the front foot, I thought we took the game to the opposition and caused them a lot of problems and then the third goal is just a bolt out the blue. It knocked us completely, and we never recovered properly.

“We looked a shadow of what we’ve looked this season. We looked ill-disciplined and fragile for that final 15 minutes, and that concerns me, especially after the last four or five games where that isn’t what we’ve looked like.

“That final 15, 20 minutes didn’t replicate what we’ve seen for large parts of the season.

“After the 7-0 defeat at Luton we responded by having a couple of clean sheets and we responded in the right way. And we’ve been on that train again and got a run of four, five games where we’ve looked good and that’s what we’ve got to do again.”
