Late comeback not enough for U’s

Shaun Derry was disappointed with Cambridge United after their 3-2 defeat to Doncaster Rovers at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

Luke Berry’s first-half penalty miss was compounded by two quick goals for the Sky Bet League Two leaders. And the visitors got a third from the spot in the second half.

But the U’s hit back with
goals from George Maris and Berry, and could perhaps have snatched a draw at the end.

However, U’s boss Derry was clearly not satisfied by the performance after the game.

“It was too little, too late at the end for me,” he said. “To have seven unbelievable opportunities against a top-of-the-table team and just take the two, and concede the three in the manner that we did, you end up losing games.

“You can’t go from one extreme to the other, and we’ve done that.

“I bang the drum about taking your opportunities and we’ve not done that.

“In one box we weren’t ruthless enough, and in the other box we definitely weren’t good enough.

“I’m not too sure people can question the character of the team, I don’t think they can do that. That’s something, I’m very proud of the boys in terms of the character and the way they keep going.

“But it’s giving yourself a mountain climb. When it’s fine margins and fine lines the way it was in the first half, I’m expecting a lot more and I didn’t get that.”
