Cambridge United head coach expecting tough battle

Shaun Derry is bracing Cambridge United for the threat posed by Forest Green Rovers’ lively front duo when they make the trip to The New Lawn tomorrow (January 20).

The Gloucestershire side are currently second from bottom in the Sky Bet League Two table having had a difficult time adjusting since last season’s promotion from the National League.

But they have been busy so far this January transfer window, making a host of new signings, including experienced striker Reuben Reid from Exeter.

“They are down there and fighting for their lives,” said U’s head coach Derry. “Forest Green have had a fantastic run over the last two or three years with what they’ve achieved and have a manager [Mark Cooper] there who has managed at a higher level.

“But I think the interesting thing about Forest Green is just how active they have been in their market.

“When they can bring in the likes of Reuben Reid and pair him with Christian Doidge, you are looking at a combination there with a lot of potential.

“With Doidge, he’s hitting the goal trail and you’ve got a centre forward [Reid] who has absolutely done it at this level.

“You look at that partnership in particular and I feel that could serves them well between now and the end of the season.

“And that obviously poses a problem for us this weekend. There are no give-mes at this level, we know that.

“You look at some of the results that even Luton have had over the last four or five weeks, who’d have thought you could predict them type of score lines? So I think that just highlights what League Two is all about.”
