U’s boss praises striker
Shaun Derry is enthused by the increasing impact that Uche Ikpeazu is having at Cambridge United.
The 21-year-old striker moved to the Cambs Glass Stadium on a short-term contract in August, and has now started to get on a run of form.
He scored his first goal in the victory over Newport County, set up Piero Mingoia’s winning effort against Accrington Stanley and was on target in the triumph over Middlesbrough in midweek.
“I’ve been really impressed with Uche,” said U’s manager Derry. “First and foremost, he is a great guy. As soon as I met him I knew he would settle right into the group and I knew that the group would like him and respond to him.
“I think the extended warmth has been grabbed by the fans. When you see somebody like that, with all of the qualities that Uche possesses, I think it generates excitement when he comes on the field.
“So he has been a big, big positive for me, a big positive for the football club and he is getting better. He is not the finished article.
“I’m not sure how much people have really worked on his game and with the amount of loans he’s had as well, he’s not really found a home and we want his home to be here.
“We want him to enjoy playing for Cambridge, and we want him to enjoy whether he comes on or starts like he did on Tuesday night, making an impact.
“He sure made one last Saturday and he did the same on Tuesday. He got his goal and was a vital player for us.”
Having missed pre-season, Ikpeazu is working on getting up to full match fitness, and Derry admits that he is still not quite there yet.
“He’s getting really close [to full fitness],” said the manager. “I wouldn’t say we’re going to see the finished article for a few weeks.
“I keep talking about the importance of pre-season, if you miss one you’re playing catch up – Uche missed one so he is still in the catch-up zone.”
