But there is good news for U’s as Barry Corr is back among the goals
Uche Ikpeazu has decided to leave Cambridge United at the end of the current Sky Bet League Two campaign.
The 23-year-old striker’s contract was up at the end of the 2017-18 season, but he has rejected offers to extend his stay at the Abbey Stadium.
The U’s have been in discussions with Ikpeazu for a number of months, but he has outlined his desire to play at a higher level.
Ikpeazu, who has 14 goals this season, has informed United of his decision to sign a pre-contract agreement elsewhere.
“Naturally we’re disappointed that Uche will not be extending his stay at the club beyond the end of the season,” said Ben Strang, United’s head of football.
“Through conversations between the club, Uche and his representatives, the club has done everything it can to persuade him to stay.
“However, we recognise that as in this case, players have the right to exercise their option to seek alternative opportunities and secure the best financial package.
“Since signing as a free agent in 2016 he’s made a good contribution to Cambridge United, and the club would like to think we have played a significant part in his development. For the remaining four games of the season, Uche will continue to give his all for the club if and when required.”
Strang added: “Meanwhile, we continue to have positive conversations with our existing players and external targets as we plan and build next season’s squad.
“Whilst we would have wanted Uche to be a part of that, we move on with our planning and adjust our focus to other targets.”
That planning took a step forward last week when defender Greg Taylor agreed to a new contract with the U’s.
The 28-year-old has been one of United’s most reliable players this season, and has signed until the end of the 2019-20 season.
On the pitch, substitute Barry Corr made the headlines with a second-half double as United won 2-0 at Stevenage.
It was the first goals for the 33-year-old striker since re-signing for the U’s on a short-term deal in January.
Corr was on the pitch for four minutes before putting the U’s ahead on 54 minutes, and he doubled the lead in the 83rd minute.
United are at home to Cheltenham Town this Saturday (April 21).
