Norris spot on for U’s

Will Norris was the hero for Cambridge United as they beat Accrington Stanley 2-1 in Sky Bet League Two.

The goalkeeper produced two stoppage-time penalty saves to help the U’s make it three wins in a row and move them further up the table.

United took the lead in the 13th minute at the Cambs Glass Stadium as the returning Piero Mingoia whipped in a free-kick that was converted by Leon Legge.

Six minutes into the second half, Accrington equalised.

Norris saved Omar Beckles’ header from a a Sean McConville corner, but the rebound fell to Billy Kee to score from close range.

In the 81st minute, a good run and cross by Uche Ikpeazu was met on the volley by Mingoia for an eye-catching goal, but there was more drama to follow.

In the first minute of stoppage time, Legge fouled Terry Gornell in the box and was sent off for a second yellow card, but Norris was a match to Chris Eagles’ spot-kick.

Having survived one scare, United were put through it all again when Matty Pearson’s header was stopped by the hand of Brad Halliday on the line, earning the U’s defender a red card.

But Norris was this time equal to Gornell’s penalty, a second spot-kick save that earned United all three points.

In Evo-Stik League Southern, Premier Division, Cambridge City drew 0-0 at home to Stratford.
