Cup progress for under-18s, while younger age group will face Chelsea

Cambridge United’s youngsters have booked a place in the Cambs Invitation Cup final.

The under-18s faced Cambridge City in the semi-finals, and earned a 3-1 win thanks to first-half goals from Ben Worman, Tom Knowles and Jordan Norville-Williams.

Lewis Wilson pulled a goal back for City, but United held on for the win to set up a clash with Ely City at the Abbey Stadium on Tuesday, April 24.

“It was very good in the first half,” said assistant first-team coach Mark Bonner. “We played some outstanding football, overloading midfield and creating some excellent attacking opportunities.

“We ended up really deep but defended our penalty area very well. We had to defend the area too often as we were a bit too deep and committed too many fouls that allowed them to put the ball in the box.

“The first half was a really attacking display and we were pleased we were clinical. In the second half we showed some resilience.

“We entered the competition to give our players some senior experience in a competitive environment; it will be another experience in the stadium.

“The competition is almost trying to create the demands of first-team football for them.

“Win or you’re out is a great scenario to put them into.”

Some more Cambridge United youngsters will get the chance to impress at the Abbey Stadium on Tuesday, April 10.

The U’s have announced a second academy match for their under-15s for the season – having played Spurs earlier in the campaign – as they will take on a Chelsea under-15/16 team, kick off 7pm.

“It’s one in a series of games where we have given our younger academy players experience to prepare them for first-team football and exposure with a stadium and to a crowd,” added Bonner.

Entry will be £5 for adults and free for children.
