President aims for back-to-back wins in Cancer Research UK Boat Races

Lance Tredell has targeted breaking a sequence that has extended for 17 years when Cambridge University race Oxford in the Cancer Research UK Boat Race on Sunday (April 2).

The Light Blues ended a run of three straight defeats on the Tideway last year, and the new-look squad now have the goal of getting back-to-back wins for the first time since 1998 and 1999.

Cambridge University Boat Club president Tredell is one of two returning Blues, meaning there are seven newcomers, including cox Hugo Ramambason, in the crew.

“Selection was very close and we’ve had some good depth in the squad so that’s driven the standard on throughout,” said Hughes Hall student Tredell.

“Internal competition is healthy; it drives the standard of everybody up so it’s been really good. I’ve enjoyed the role as president with a few extra responsibilities but generally my approach hasn’t been any different. My approach last year was very much to not only progress myself as much as possible on a daily basis, but also help the guys around me.

“It’s younger guys this year. Last year I was the only new guy, whereas this year we’ve got a lot of new guys so there’s a slightly different challenge in gelling everybody together, but we’ve really come together nicely.”

And whereas the motivation for last year was ending a losing run, it is now about trying to establish a winning run for the Light Blues.

“Cambridge haven’t won back-to-back races since the late ‘90s so we’ve got a really great opportunity ahead of us this year to really start a dominant period for Cambridge,” said Tredell.

“Oxford had won a few times in a row before that and last year we put an end to that, so this year we have
the opportunity to start our own winning streak.”
