Big knocks form backbone of county innings

Cambridgeshire bounced back from a friendly defeat to Cambridge University MCCU to defeat Northumberland by three wickets in the Unicorns Trophy.

The warm-up game at Fenner’s saw Cambs win the toss and bat first, posting a total of 166 for 9.

Nick Winder took four for 33 for Cambridge.

And in reply, Jonathan Das hit 45, Tom Corner 24 and Karthik Suresh 22 as the university side won by one wicket by reaching 168.

But Cambs were in brilliant batting form at Saffron Walden when they took on Northumberland in Group 3 of the trophy.

They put in the visitors, and big knocks from Adam Cragg (72) and Sameet Brar (95) helped them make 348 for 8. Joe Dawborn took four for 41 and Chris Pepper three for 115.

Asim Butt led the way for Cambs though, hitting 128.

Pepper departed for 66 and at the time, Cambs needed 44 off 4.1 overs.

But wicketkeeper Paul Summerskill smashed a brutal 72 off just 30 balls, and debutant Ricordo Gordon hit two maximums in the penultimate over to see Cambs home with seven balls to spare.
