Success sees promotion from Cambs & Hunts Premier League, Division Two

Hamza Rashid has expressed his pride in Cambridge Granta II after they earned promotion from Whiting & Partners Cambs and Hunts Cricket League, Division Two.

They earned a 134-run win over Castor & Ailsworth to take the title, although were made to work hard for the success.

Batting first, having been 134 for 5, they collapsed to 174 all out.

Deepak Raj took two early Castor & Ailsworth wickets, but they were ticking along at 31 for 3, before Zaman Ahkter and Rashid entered the fray.

Akhter returned figures of five for 20 and Rashid took three for 10 as Castor & Ailsworth were skittled out for 60, handing Granta II the title.

“At one point we were 100 for 3, and we were all out for 174 so the last 20 overs we couldn’t score anything,” said Rashid.

“I was confident with our bowling, but there is a bigger chance of getting 174 than 220 or 230.”

A run of 10 wins in a row had looked to put the title in Granta’s hands, but they slipped up in the run-in and Thriplow were putting the pressure on.

“In the last four weeks, we gave Thriplow a big chance of winning the league,” said Granta captain Rashid. “We lost to them and we lost to St Giles. It has been up and down for the last month.

“We were very lucky in the middle part of the season. We had 10 wins in a row, we had consistency of nine players and six or seven were performing out of those nine and that really helped.

“Those 10 matches in a row put us right at the top.

“I’m pleased for all of the youngsters, they have been brilliant this year.

“I’m proud of all of the boys and all they have achieved to be honest.”

He added: “We’ve lost so many players and we’ve been struggling to get the two teams every week as there were always one or two missing, so it should be good for the club.”
