New girls’ squad launched for next year

Joe Uttridge is keen to spread the cricketing word to pupils in state school education.

He is the MCC Foundation Cambridgeshire Cricket Hub manager/coach, which is set to enter its fifth year.

And the 2018 programme will feature four squads, with the addition of an under-13 girls’ hub for the first time.

The hub has been established since 2013, with the support of Comberton Village College, and has run squads at under-12, under-13 and under-15 levels.

It is responsible for finding young cricketers in state school education who show aptitude and skill, and then aims to provide them with high-quality coaching and facilities in order to reach their potential.

“I would think we are now the biggest hub nationally,” said Uttridge. “We are up to four squads and play a lot of games, probably one of the hubs that plays the most games.

“It’s built up and is a good thing and what cricket needs, and what Cambridge needs.

“It is doing so well that in some cases kids want to stay in the hub rather than go and play other representative cricket.

“It opens cricket up to all demographics; it’s aim is to take raw talent from state schools.”

The coaching sessions take place from January to March, but in order to identify potential cricketers, trials will be held this December at Hills Road Indoor Sports Centre.

The trial dates for under-12s are December 9 and 16, the dates for the under-13s are December 9 and 17, and for the under-15s it is December 9 and 16. And the dates for the newly-launched under-13 girls’ squad are December 10 and 16.

“We have funding for girls this year which is a really good thing,” said Uttridge. “Girls’ cricket is one of the growing sports at the moment so I’m keen to build that.

“We consulted with the county programmes where they have a glut of players and under-13 is generally the level.”
