But Burwell suffer defeat

Michael Pepper and Johnny Atkinson formed a vital partnership as Cambridge Granta made a winning start to the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League season by beating Copdock & Old Ipswichian by one wicket.

Granta won the toss and elected to field, and they may have been rueing the decision as Copdock & Old Ipswichian raced to 173 without losing a wicket.

Jaik Mickleburgh eventually fell for 88, to Granta debutant Owen Simonsen, but fellow opener Martyn Cull went on to reach 100 before being caught by Jake Lawrence, off the bowling of Lewys Hill.

However, Jack Beaumont weighed in with an unbeaten 59 to take Copdock to 271 for 3 at the end of their innings.

After the early loss of their openers, Pepper and captain Atkinson joined forces at 17 for 2, and they took the scoring along to 134, before Pepper was run out on 65.

Atkinson kept going though, and made 94 before being caught off the bowling of Beaumont.

Granta managed to get over the winning line though, thanks to Hill’s unbeaten knock of 21, with Rajan Singh at the other end, as they finished on 272 for 9.

There was not such good news for Burwell though, as they were beaten by six wickets by Sudbury.

Burwell lost the toss and batted first, but they were never able to string any big partnerships together, the best being the 50 put on by Paul Summerskill and Ben Seabrook for the fifth wicket, with the latter getting 36.

Sam Rippington then added 37 but he was left on the crease as Burwell were bowled out for 174.

Josh Arksey took two Sudbury wickets, but the hosts had 61 from opener Tom Huggins and 53no from Ben Reece to guide them to 178 for 4, for 25 points.

Cambridge Granta are at home on Sunday this week, and they will be hosting Frinton-On-Sea, who beat Norwich last weekend.

Burwell are at home on Saturday to defending champions Swardeston, who beat Horsford last weekend.
