Under-15 girls’ cricket team make impact at Lord’s

John Read has expressed his pride in The Perse School girls’ under-15 cricket team after they earned bronze medals in the Lady Taverners national indoor finals at Lord’s.

They were just one of five regional champions to reach the finals, which was played as a round-robin tournament to decide the winners.

The Perse lost to Shrewsbury School and were beaten by five runs by eventual champions Bournemouth School for Girls.

In their third game, they beat St Bede’s School by 42 runs, having set a target of 86 for 7 and then dismissing their opponents for 44.

They made 100 for 6 in their final match against Queen Elizabeth High School, and then restricted their opponents to 48 for 7 to earn a 52-run success.

After the results from the final round of games, it was confirmed The Perse had won bronze.

“At the start of the day they were a little bit nervous and their performances reflected that, but once they got into their game, they played superbly in their last two games,” said coach Read.

“It’s the first time they’ve reached the finals, so to finish third is a very good result. I’m very proud of the girls.

“In the post-match talk, I told the girls there are so many cricketers all over the world who would love to say they’ve played at Lord’s and they’ll be able to say that in years to come.”
