Favourites live up to expectations
Dave Quinney and Nick Smits lived up to their favourites’ status as they won the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union County Foursomes title.
Host club Saffron Walden’s Graham Goodman and Steve Plumb were the early leaders with a score of 73, but they were soon overhauled by Quinney and Smits.
The Gog Magog duo fired five birdies and dropped two shots on their way to an opening round of 69.
And clubmates Gareth Bell and Richard Temple made a late charge to sit joint second on 73.
In the afternoon, county captain Mark Reeve and Olly Tuck raced to five under par after 10 holes, and after a dropped shot on the 13th, finished with 68 for a total of 142.
Goodman and Plumb drifted out of contention after scoring 81 in the afternoon, while Quinney and Smits arrived on the last hole of the second round needing a three to win.
A poor tee shot left them in a difficult position after their second effort, but Smits calmly rolled the ball home to see them finish with 72 for a 141 total. Bell and Temple were third with 146, after a second round 73.
Gog Magog’s Mark Critoph and Paul Johnson were winners of the best nett prize after hitting 147.
