Cambs FA assistant referee to officiate at Wembley

Marc Wilson will be flying the flag for Cambridge at Wembley on Sunday.

The 27-year-old assistant referee has been selected to officiate in the Buildbase FA Vase final between Cleethorpes Town and South Shields at the national stadium.

Wilson started refereeing in 2003, when he was 14, and his biggest game to date has been as assistant referee for the FA Cup, third round match between Ipswich Town and Lincoln City.

“It is still a bit of a shock. I was not expecting it but am absolutely delighted,” said Wilson about his appointment to the FA Vase final.

“I haven’t stopped smiling about it since. I was in a little shock at the time. The call came around 11am and the appointment was released at 4pm.

“Something inside me couldn’t believe it was real until I saw it in black and white.

“Simply the best feeling in the world to be told you have been selected to officiate on a cup final at Wembley.”

Wilson, who is a project manager in Newmarket, has ambitions to officiate at the highest level possible and do the role full time one day.

And he is looking forward to officiating at Wembley.

“It is going to be such an unreal experience,” he said. “I am so pleased those who have coached me locally and helped me reach this point of my career are able to attend.”

Cambridgeshire FA referees’ officer Colin Hills said: “I am absolutely delighted for Marc; he fully deserves this accolade.

“To officiate in a major final at Wembley stadium is a fantastic achievement, and one that all referees aspire to.

“It just proves that if you have the skills and are prepared to work hard, the rewards are there. I am sure Marc will have a fantastic day and represent Cambridgeshire FA with pride.”
