Lowest-ranked side lay blows on opponents

Gareth Furlong has had a tournament of close calls with Wales hockey at the Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old former Cambridge Nomad is at his second Games, and the young side were eager to show their development on the Gold Coast.

As the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, Wales were always going to be up against it but they gave all their opponents a run for their money.

In the opening match, they earned a 1-1 draw with Pakistan.

In their next match, Wales were beaten 3-0 by Malaysia, which led Furlong to tweet: “Tough result to take yesterday against Malaysia, another big game against India this evening #teamwales #gc2018 #goldcoast.”

It proved to be a fruitful performance for Furlong against India as he grabbed a hat-trick of penalty corner goals, however, they were unable to hold on for victory, losing 4-3.

“Proud of the team performance against India, gutted we couldn’t quite get over the line. Another great chance to back it up this afternoon against England #teamwales,” tweeted Furlong.

But in that match against England there was heartbreak. Wales went 2-0 up, but were pegged back, with England scoring the winner in the last four minutes.

Newmarket-based Callum Wilkinson had an impressive Commonwealth Games as he finished in the top 10 in the 20km race walk.

The 21-year-old clocked 1hr 22min 35sec to take seventh place, as England compatriot Tom Bosworth won the silver medal.

Wilkinson tweeted: “A privilege to race for @TeamEngland today, so happy with 7th and 1:22:35 only just under 20 secs slower than my pb, thanks to all for the amazing support from the other side of the world and course-side #newstateofmind.”
