Javelin star to get Beijing medal

Goldie Sayers is finally set to receive the bronze medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Sayers finished fourth in the javelin final in China with a British record throw of 65.75m, with Russian Mariya Abakumova taking silver with 70.78m.

A subsequent re-analysis of Abakumova’s sample from the Beijing Games tested positive for anabolic steroid turinabol, and she was stripped of the silver.

Abakumova appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, however, that appeal was dismissed last Thursday.

Sayers is now set to receive the bronze medal, with Christina Obergfoll, who threw 66.13m.

“Reading that I’m another step closer to my Olympic medal is a very surreal feeling,” said Sayers in a statement on social media, “partly because Beijing was a decade ago but also because it has taken CAS over 16 months to come to a decision on this appeal.

“I was scanning Twitter earlier today, whilst sitting on a train at Taunton, and saw the press release saying the Russian athlete’s appeal had been dismissed. Whilst my lifestyle has changed a little from 2008, the sense of pride and great memories of a British record performance in an Olympic final hasn’t.

“It’s a great moment for my family, friends, coach and team who supported me throughout my athletics career to share.

“A party will certainly be planned after I finally get my hands on my medal and all will be invited.”
