End to Midlands League season gives optimism for next season

Graham Goodman is aiming to raise the bar next season after Cambridgeshire seniors finished third in the Midlands League with a win over Leicestershire.

At Leicestershire GC, Gog Magog’s Neil Hughes and Kevin Diss won one up in the foursomes, and Ely City’s Terry Ryan and Bob Setchell got a half, but Cambs were 4½-1½ down at lunch.

Diss and Hughes got things going in the fourballs with a 2&1 win, David Hayns and Keith Moore won one up, Goodman and John Yuill ran out 3&2 winners and there was a 2&1 success for Ryan and Setchell.

Halves for Bill Rusted and Alan Campbell, and Kevin Hayes and John Davies helped Cambs to a 11½–6½ win.

“To win away at Leicestershire was a great achievement,” said Cambs captain Goodman. “After being down at lunchtime the team showed their never-give-up attitude and competitive spirit and to win the first four fourballs was memorable. We finished third in the league with this last league game which sets us up to raise the level of performance even higher next year.”
