Stutes hold leaders to a draw

Histon and Felixstowe & Walton had to settle for a point apiece in a hard-fought 1-1 draw in the Thurlow Nunn League, Premier Division.

It was heavy going on the Glass World Stadium pitch, with the constant wet weather cutting up the surface as the in-form Stutes took on runaway leaders Felixstowe.

In spite of that though, both teams were trying their hardest to get the ball on the deck and play through each other.

However, it did end up turning into more of a battle in the midfield.

Given the fact that Felixstowe & Walton are the runaway leaders, Histon were probably content with their first-half performance which limited the visitors to a couple of clear-cut chances.

Miles Powell looked the most likely to break the deadlock for the Seasiders, and he had the first opportunity of the half, muscling his way into the area and around a defender before hitting a slow, low shot that hit the post and bounced clear.

Powell then showed great control to bring down a goal kick before firing his effort narrowly wide.

Histon’s only real opportunity of the first half came from Matt Hayden, but his effort went wide.

The Stutes’ keeper Sam Roach then called into action to make a smart save from Joe Francis, who had played clean through on the angle.

It was only seven minutes into the second half that the deadlock was broken, and it was done so in some style.

Francis stood over a free kick about 25 yards out to the left of Histon’s goal, and he nestled a brilliant shot into the top corner of the goal.

Felixstowe almost doubled the lead when Powell thundered an effort against the bar from the edge of the area, but Histon immediately broke up the other end, and Hayden fired just off target.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 65th minute when Francis was sent off for a second bookable offence.

And only minutes later, Histon were level.

Substitute Joe Sutton delivered a great cross deep into the area and Ed Rolph rose highest to head the ball into the far corner.

Histon were trying to make their extra man tell as they dominated for the rest of the half, as Max York shot wide in the area and Rolph had a header go off target.

But there was no way through and a draw was a fair result for both sides.
