Stutes maintain winning run

Histon stretched their winning run to four games with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Haverhill Rovers in the Thurlow Nunn League, Premier Division.

Goals from Matt Hayden, Evan Key and Tommy Wright did the job for the Stutes, who were in control from the off, but had to wait until the second half to stamp their full authority on the game.

It was a strange first half as it felt as if they were in control for large periods, but the odd lapse then let in the visitors with some good opportunities.

The other frustration was Histon’s ability to keep the ball.

Lee Smith was a vocal presence on the pitch, urging his team-mates not to rush in getting the ball forward, and those instructions were being echoed by the coaching staff.

However, a bit too often that advice was being overlooked and Haverhill seemed quite content to try to deal with the attempted ball over the top.

Some neat build-up play had led to the first chance for Histon in the eighth minute, with Danny Gould’s effort gathered at the second attempt by Rovers keeper Charlie Turner.

Two minutes later though, and the deadlock was broken.

A free kick into the area was headed back across goal by Evan Key which was then met by Max York, whose header was on target but Matt Hayden poached to make no mistake.

A poor defensive clearance allowed Luke Haines to fire into the arms of Histon keeper Luke Knight, and then Haverhill almost crafted an equaliser.

A ball over the top was expertly controlled by Rory Jebb, and the striker then unleashed a volley which thundered back off Knight’s right-hand upright.

It was largely Histon for the remainder of the half, with Tommy Wright and Key having efforts that went just wide, while some good work from York saw him cross with the outside of his boot, and Hayden’s header was thwarted by Turner.

Histon seemed to be far more composed after the break, getting the ball on the deck and in behind the Haverhill defence.

The half was only three minutes old when Key rose to head down a corner which took a slight deflection on the way into the net to make it 2-0.

The chances kept coming as York’s diving header went wide and Hayden volleyed over the bar.

But the third goal arrived in the 66th minute, as Danny Gould’s broke clear wide on the left and zipped in a low cross that the on-rushing Wright made no mistake from.

Rovers pulled a goal back in the 80th minute as Jebb was not closed down from a throw-in and his shot from the edge of the area appeared to move in the air to deceive Knight.

Jebb had a chance to get a second in the 88th minute, but his effort was easy for Knight as Histon saw out the remaining minutes with no more serious worries.
