Stutes back to winning ways after tricky spell

It may be fading light outside in November, but the month has been providing some brightness for Histon.

Having made an unbeaten start to the season through August, Lance Key’s side suffered some choppy waters during September and October.

But a 6-1 victory at Great Yarmouth Town last Saturday made it three wins in 10 days, following successes over Saffron Walden in the league cup and Gorleston in the league.

“The last few games we’ve done very well,” said manager Key.

“September and October weren’t great months for us after a
fantastic start.

“We had 13 players away at one point or another to miss one or two games and that was out of the 18-man squad over that two-month period.

“It took a toll on our resources during that period.”

Key was delighted to see Histon show a ruthless side against Great Yarmouth, with Matt Hayden scoring twice and Pat Bexfield, Evan Key, Casey Phillips and James Carman all on target.

“We seem to have turned the corner again in terms of taking our chances,” said Key.

“In the second half, every time we broke we could have scored at will.

“It’s the first time we’ve put a team to bed when we had the chance.

“The better teams do that week in, week out and we have to do that and be more ruthless.

“The top four is going to be difficult to get into but we have to play them again and hopefully we will get our just rewards.”

He added: “The squad have responded magnificently in the last 10 days.”

Key also praised keeper Luke Knight, who has come in from Anglia Ruskin University and saved three penalties in two games – two against Saffron Walden and one against Gorleston.

“Luke is raw but when he keeps goal he keeps it very well,” he said.

“We can work on him as well and make technical improvements so he has been a good find.”
