Stutes to suffer drop from Evo-Stik League

Histon suffered the bitterest of blows as an injury-time goal from Bedford Town saw them suffer a 2-1 defeat and relegation from the Evo-Stik League Southern, Division One Central.

After a 2-1 loss at second-placed Farnborough on Saturday, they were still in with a shout of staying up after Northwood, who were only four points above them, were also beaten.

Bedford had gone ahead on Easter Monday in the 37th minute through Jemale McKenzie-Lowe, but Histon were back on level terms through Dan Gleeson in the 66th minute.

And as they chased a winner, Bedford keeper and former Histon player Enol Ordonez produced a string of saves to keep the hosts at bay.

In the 93rd minute, he produced a fingertip stop from Lee Smith, and from the resulting corner, Bedford broke to score the winning goal.

“Should we just have taken the draw and gone again next week and seen what happens?” said Histon boss Lance Key. “The likelihood of getting a
win at Kempston is harder
than winning at home to Bedford though.

“That’s the only thing eating away at me. We gave it everything, and it wasn’t quite good enough on the day.

“I’ve been relegated once before when I was at Sheffield Wednesday but I joined in the April and we got relegated on May 1 so I don’t count that one.

“But that was the only relegation I’ve been involved in until yesterday [Monday] and it wasn’t nice.

“The damage was done in the first third of the season and if things were different then who knows where we might have been.”

He added: “Even though it’s gut-wrenching now, it’s why we’re still involved in it because we have the passion for the game and that’s shown with the group of players that we have here.”
