Jonnie Peacock described an “absolutely incredible” night when earning the T44 100m gold medal at the World Para Athletics Championships at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The 24-year-old former Cambridge Regional College student was slower than usual out of the blocks, but took off in the second 50m.

Peacock, who had caught the eye with an impressive performance in the heats, flew past the USA’s Jarryd Wallace to win in 10.76sec, with Germany’s Johannes Floors taking the silver and Wallace third.

“I was feeling some serious cramp in warm up [prior to the final] – my hamstring was going which is why I kept stretching out,” said Peacock.

“I’m just thankful that I finished the race; I guess the noise really does help it. I think we keep proving that events need to be held in Great Britain – this has been absolutely incredible.

“We are showing that events here in the UK are outstanding and no one is matching that for para sport.

“I don’t think the event should go anywhere else – every world championships should be here because this crowd creates such an amazing atmosphere.

“There is no place quite like it for Paralympic sport.”
