Big accolade for Cambridgeshire athlete

Jonnie Peacock earned third place in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.

The 24-year-old former Cambridge Regional College athlete earned 73,429 public votes after his exploits at last summer’s World Para-athletics Championships where he won gold in the T44 100m.

He pipped Anthony Joshua to third place by just 18 votes, as athlete Mo Farah won ahead of world superbike champion Jonathan Rea.

“It’s been a slightly strange year for me and this has been absolutely surreal,” said Peacock.

“I think watching everybody do their piece, you see the incredible athletes we have in this country.”
