Cambridge Nomads also make victorious start

Karen Coulton marked her competitive debut for Cambridge South with the only goal of the game as Cambridge South won 1-0 against Long Sutton in East Women’s League, Division 2NW.

They started well against a team they failed to beat last season, forcing a string of penalty corners, but Long Sutton were dangerous on the counter-attack.

South’s tenacity in attack was epitomised by player-of-the-match Katie Gibson, and the breakthrough came with 10 minutes remaining. New recruits Sam McComish and Coulton combined for the latter to score.

Goals from Ellie Martin, Annie Mather and Sarah Warren sealed Cambridge Nomads a 3-0 win over Cambridge City IV in 2NW.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy in a tough and tense first half that ended goalless.

Nomads were stronger after the break, working better as a unit, and Martin opened the scoring.

It was 2-0 when Warren’s reverse-stick shot was saved by City’s keeper, but fell to Mather to hit home a reverse-stick strike.

As Nomads picked up the pace, Warren moved wide of a defender to smash home the third. Captain Zoe Andrews was named player of the match for her work rate and attacking and defending.

Two goals apiece from Izzy MacDonald-Parry, player-of-the-match Jess Woodhouse and Lucy Davidson, plus one from new signing Irina Burnet gave South II a 7-0 win over Haverhill II in 4NW (S).

South III’s long winning run was brought to an end as they were beaten 2-1 by Newmarket II in 4NW (S).

They were unbeaten since March 2017 after blazing a trail to the 5NW (N) title last season, but in an evenly-contested game fell 2-0 adrift.

Lauren Brown pulled a goal back for South with 10 minutes remaining, but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Nomads II lost 1-0 to Bury St Edmunds III in 4NW (S).

South IV had eight debutants as they lost 3-1 to Sudbury III in 5NW (S). New player Fiona Wright got their goal.
