Vice-captain makes the most of St Ives course

Keith Moore made the most of home knowledge to win the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union Seniors’ County Championship at St Ives.

The club’s vice-captain made a good start from the 10th tee, making eagle on the par five 11th into the wind, and a birdie on his ninth hole took him out in 35, when anything under 80 looked likely to stand a chance for the title.

Moore started the inward nine with a double bogey and then a bogey, but steadied the ship with a birdie on the fourth.

It left him at one over par, but another double bogey put Moore on three over with three to play.

A birdie was followed by a triple bogey seven on his final hole, giving him 77. But most of his likely challengers had a poor start so it worked in his favour.

Neil Hughes had a finish of bogey, triple bogey, double bogey and bogey to go from needing four pars for 76 to out of the race for the championship, and 2017 champion Jeremy Baldwin saw a triple bogey on the seventh end his chances.

Moore ended up with a clear winning margin of four shots, with John Yuil in second spot on a card play-off after hitting 81.

St Ives’ Mark Dutton won the best nett prize with 73.

Winners of the age category prizes were Graham Goodman (55 to 59 years), Steve Plumb (60 to 64 years), Peter Laughlin (65 to 69 years) and Neil Hughes (over-70s).

There were only two twos on the day, from Mark Lydon and Hughes, so they shared the £230 sweep pot.
