Rookie makes encouraging start

Luke Davenport made a promising start to life in the MSA British Touring Car Championship.

The 23-year-old Cambridge-based driver was making his debut for Team Shredded Wheat Racing with DUO at the season’s opener at Brands Hatch, and earned two second-place finishes in the rookies’ competition, the Jack Sears Trophy.

In the opening race of three, Davenport finished 19th overall, and was the second-placed rookie on the grid.

An encouraging run in the second race was brought to an abrupt end on lap 12 following heavy contact to the #300 Focus ST.

But Davenport bounced back to come through the battle at the rear of the grid to finish in 20th overall.

“It seems to be the small things that let me down this weekend, which will all come with experience and time in the car,” said Davenport.

“We had the pace in the car; it was mainly the starts held me back this weekend but they’ll come with time.

“We just missed out on a Jack Sears Trophy win in the last race which was frustrating as I was pushed off the line.

“So we were nearly there and it’s a bit of what could have been. However, it’s fired me up for Donington and I think with a stronger qualifying performance we should be on for some better results.”

Davenport’s team-mates, Mat Jackson and Martin Depper, both picked up solid point finishes in the Ford Focus STs.

Jackson had finishes of eighth, fifth and 13th, while Depper was 15th and 22nd, but was forced into an early retirement in the second race.
