Luke Davenport could take heart from an improved display in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Thruxton.

The 23-year-old rookie driver was in action with Team Shredded Wheat Racing with DUO and an impressive lap saw him qualify in 15th place, while team-mate Mat Jackson broke into the top 10.

Davenport’s learning curve continued as he crossed the line in the first race in 17th, and he repeated the feat in the second race to get his first Jack Sears Trophy win of the season as the highest-placed rookie.

But he had an unavoidable accident in race three which lost him the Jack Sears Trophy for the day. He was leading the race when a car on the track in front stopped and he was at the back of the group in front as they passed.

But the car in front moved at the last minute and right in front was an MG at a standstill.

Davenport sustained heavy damage ruling him out of the rest of the race.

“I’m very pleased with how things went on Saturday, that was our plan coming into the weekend, to improve our qualifying results and we made massive gains,” said Davenport.

“Sadly, we weren’t able to quite take that confidence into the races, and we had a difficult day after having our race three ended by someone else.

“It’s a bitter pill to swallow but we just need to put it behind us, move onto the next round and aim to put it right there.”

Team principal David Bartrum said: “We started the weekend in a positive mood. Luke did a super job in free practice 2, getting up to 6th.

“Qualifying also went well with Mat getting into the top ten and Luke in 15th – which is a big ask this year up against such a competitive grid.”

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Ben Barker and his Gulf Racing team in the latest World Endurance Championship event, the 6 Hours of Spa.

They did not classify a result after having to retire the car after lap 76.
