Brampton Park golfer has Ron Freeman Foursomes and Wheeler Salver success
Owen Davies completed a Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union double at the weekend.
As the season draws to a close, the summer-long championships are reaching a conclusion and the Brampton Park golfer had a prominent role in two tournaments last Saturday and Sunday.
In the Ron Freeman Foursomes at the Links Golf Club, Newmarket, Davies was joined by St Neots’ Danny Loveday to take on Gog Magog’s Tom Rogers and Jack Sears.
Davies and Loveday gained the upper hand early on, being three up through 11, and after halves on the 12th and 13th, a 20ft putt for birdie on the 15th by Davies clinched a 4&3 success.
Rogers, who has won the John Durman Trophy and the Sharplin Bowl for the most points in a season playing for the county team in the Anglian League this season, was again the opponent for Davies in the county matchplay championship, the Wheeler Salver, which was played on the Old Course at Gog Magog.
The Brampton player was two up at the turn having eagled the eighth.
He had stretched his advantage to four up after winning the 12th and 13th, but Rogers fought back with a birdie on 14 and victory on the 15th to cut the deficit to two.
However, Davies putted to four feet for a four at the 16th to clinch a 3&2 win, and take the Wheeler Salver for a second time in three years.
Davies is third in the David Milburn Order of Merit with 1,020 points. Rogers is second with 1,280 and Gog Magog’s Ed Dimambro remains the long-time leader with 1,330 with just the finals day remaining at Ely on October 21.
Ely City represented Cambridgeshire at the English Champion Club event at Huddersfield Golf Club.
The trio of Ross Wilson, Luke Ryan and Shane Hornsey finished in 23rd with a cumulative 479.
