Division One success for women’s team
Jasmine Gluyai and Katrin Hulme shared the glory as Anglia Ruskin University’s women’s team won the National Basketball League, Division One play-off trophy with victory over Essex Blades.
At the National Basketball Performance Arena, they had trailed the Blades by 10 points at half time.
With the clock ticking down, they were still 66-64 adrift, but first-year student Gluyai netted a three-point shot.
Hulme then produced a game-saving block on the buzzer to protect the 67-66 lead, and it was an action that helped her win the most valuable player award.
It was a fitting end to a season that started with eight straight defeats for Anglia Ruskin, with 12 wins out of 14 matches earning them seventh and a place in the play-offs.
They beat second seeds Southwark Pride 67-59 in the quarter-finals and Oxford Brookes 79-64 in the semis to reach the final.
Anglia Ruskin’s head coach Cristina Baiocco said: “I think the key that changed our game was the fact we believed we could do it and win.
“We prepared for two weeks and worked so hard for this game. In the end we did what we knew we could do.”
Martin Beaver, head of sport and Active Anglia said: “Congratulations to our National League team and coaches on a fantastic achievement.
“It’s a great result for the university and it’s exciting to see the team progress further than ever before.”
