Double delight for City
Rebecca Hayward scored two goals as Cambridge City secured a comfortable 2-0 win over West Herts in Investec Women’s Hockey League, Conference East.
City were the dominant team throughout, but were finding it difficult to get past the West Herts goalkeeper, who was in inspired form.
Holly Parsons was finding time and space to control the midfield and that was giving City the opportunity to pose a threat from out wide to get into the D.
Kate Axford was twice denied by the keeper before the breakthrough finally arrived from a third penalty corner.
Coach Ross Hayward got the message on to the pitch, and his players executed the call to perfection, with the well-worked move getting possession to Rebecca Hayward to score.
After half time, Ella Dowling was twice denied by a good double save from the keeper as City sought to extend their advantage.
West Herts then rallied and took the game to City, with Polly Oakman having to produce a good stop.
But with around 10 minutes remaining, Therese De Souza went on a mazy run and moved the ball out wide to Parsons, and she then sent a pass into the D for Rebecca Hayward, who took a touch and then shot into the goal.
City were unable to add any more goals to their tally, but they were worthy winners.
