Fourth team secure 6NW (S) win

Rob Barton led the scoring for Cambridge South IV as they wrapped up the East Men’s League, Division 6NW (S) title with a 5-1 win over St Ives V.

They went into the game needing a point to take the crown, and were 3-0 up by half time before staying in command to secure their victory.

Barton hit a hat-trick, man-of-the-match Oli Anderson added a solo effort and Paul South scored one.

Paul Matthews and Zinny Longson scored for Cambridge Nomads as they lost 5-2 at Bourne Deeping in Division One.

Mike Karran struck twice as Cambridge South picked up a crucial three points in their 2S relegation scrap by beating West Herts III 5-1.

They were two points clear of the drop zone going into the game, and were on top from the outset with midfielder Tom Kelmsley particularly prominent.

Karran grabbed two goals and Harry Chalk, Paresh Parsot and Chris Pearson got one apiece.

In 4NW, South II were held to a 2-2 draw at strugglers Alford & District.

Jack Chalk gave them the lead, but Alford levelled before half time.

The visitors went ahead in the second half, only for Max Holgate to equalise for South 30 seconds later.

South III bounced back from a poor start to hold 4NW leaders Wisbech Town II to a 3-3 draw.

Two strikes in the first three minutes saw South facing an uphill battle but they stabilised to draw level by half time, thanks to a brace from Josh Oldfield.

They had the run of play after the break and Joe Whittaker got the winner after Alex Baekelandt’s penalty corner had been saved.

Wisbech responded with an equaliser with 10 minutes to play, and South keeper Matt Saint-Gower made some vital saves to help his side become the first team to take points off Wisbech at home this season.

There was more disappointment for Cambridge City in the Investec Men’s League, Conference East.

Goals from Nathanael Farrant and Warren D’Souza put them 2-0 up at Teddington, but the hosts hit back to win 5-2.
