Good weekend in the points at the Hungaroring for Cambridge driver

Rob Huff earned his first win of the new FIA World Touring Car Cup season in Hungary.

The 38-year-old Cambridge-based driver had made a promising start to the campaign in the opening round, but stepped on again in the Sébastien Loeb Racing Volkswagen GTI TCR at Hungaroring.

In the first of three races, Huff made a great start to go from eighth to fifth, and he held the same position on the conclusion of the race.

A strategic call in qualifying helped Huff get pole on the reversed grid for the second race, and that was key to his victory as he held off the Hyundais of Daniel Nagy and Yvan Muller.

In a red-flag interrupted third race, Huff’s momentum was lost on the resumption but he held on to eighth for another finish in the points.

“The one thing we’ve been working on is our starts and trying to get consistency, and we’ve found that,” said Huff.

“I didn’t think a race win was on the cards this weekend, but the team made a great call in qualifying to give me the opportunity and asked me to abort the lap I was on which would have put me up in P6 or P7 and miss the reversed grid pole, which as we know from Marrakech, means you’re effectively stuck there.

“This is the sort of weekend we want to try and have regularly.

“We’re aiming for a 40-point average each weekend, which is probably a bit high, but we’ve achieved it.

“I’m really pleased and now we’re going to get a huge weight break for the next race, which is what’s needed and now we’ll be able to take the fight to Hyundai and Honda.”
