Ningbo International Speedpark reaps rewards for Cambridge driver

Rob Huff had to dig deep to earn three top-10 finishes in the FIA World Touring Car Cup at the Ningbo International Speedpark in China.

The Cambridge-based driver did not have the best of times in free practice as the Sebastien Loeb Racing team’s Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR struggled with handling issues.

The car was transformed overnight to help Huff qualify in ninth place for the first race, and then he charged through the order to settle into a rhythm that sealed sixth place.

In the reversed grid second race, Huff fought his way to fifth despite being involved in some rough battles and the victim of some risky manoeuvres.

And in the final race, Huff held off the chasing Audis and Cupras to clinch another sixth-place finish, giving him 31 points from the two days to sit ninth overall in the championship standings.

“Considering how the weekend started, to come away with 31 points was a very good result,” said Huff.

“The one-lap performance of our car wasn’t great, but the race performance was brilliant.

“We really lost out with the red flag in Race 3 (due to kerb damage), as before that I was pulling away from the Audis and reeling Norbi (Michelisz) and (Denis) Dupont in, and then when we stopped everyone got to put on fresh tyres, which I think is a rule we should change.

“It definitely didn’t work in our favour.

“To come away with 31 points considering we were 17th in free practice two is great.

“We’ve worked harder this weekend than we’ve ever worked to really find the speed. The speed’s usually come quite naturally to us except in Slovakia, and this weekend we’ve had to look deep into the bucket to get the best result possible.”
