Cambridge driver misses out on points finish

Rob Huff missed out on a points’ finish at the TCR International Series at the Hungaroring.

Competing at the venue for the second time this year – the first being in the World Touring Car Championship – Huff was racing for the Leopard Racing Team WRT.

He was in the new, replacement Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR after his crash at the Salzburgring in the previous round, but the team only took delivery of the car two days before the race.

There was an engine power delivery issue that plagued the team throughout practice, qualifying and the first race.

Huff qualified for the first race in sixth, but it only lasted two laps after he was caught in the battle with the three SEAT Leons due to the power problem, and he then damaged the radiator of his Golf, leading to the engine overheating.

Huff had a good start in race two, but was spun by a SEAT that dropped him to 15th, and although he recovered, he was only able to finish in 11th.

“It was a very unfortunate, frustrating weekend on the whole,” said Huff. “We started off with problem after problem, but by the second race, all the problems seemed to be sorted, so it’s a shame as it’s about what could have been.

“I think we could have been on the podium, and possibly even have won because the car was really quick, but to be turned around and dropped to 15th is so frustrating.

“Stian Paulsen unfortunately hit me after I made a really good start – I was up to P3 or P2. I’m not sure what really happened, but at the exit of turn one, I took a big hit on the rear-right from Paulsen.

“I managed to save it, but it dropped me down to around 15th place. The car was quick, we had the fastest third sector of the race, and if we were out front we could have done really well.”
