And Imogen Grant narrowly misses out on a podium place

Henry Fieldman coxed Great Britain men’s eight to a silver medal at the World Rowing Cup regatta in Belgrade.

The Cambridge University Boat Club coxing consultant steered the crew to second in 5min 26.01sec. Germany took the gold medal in 5.24.91.

Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club’s Imogen Grant made her Great Britain senior debut in the lightweight single sculls.

The Bar Hill-based oarswoman is still an under-23, but she produced an impressive display to finish second in her semi-final.

And she came within inches of taking a memorable bronze medal, staging a second-half comeback in the final to move from fifth to challenge Germany’s Ledina Meier but lost out by less than half a second.

Brendan Purcell, British Rowing’s director of performance, said: “I’m looking forward to getting to know the athletes better in the weeks ahead of the next world cup and discussing with the coaching and support staff how we can continue on an upwards trajectory.”
