Fly-half shines in victory over Epping Upper Clapton
James Hayward was the star of the show for Cantabrigian as they earned a 39-36 win over Epping Upper Clapton in London League 2NE.
Cantabs were seeking revenge for a 29-17 defeat to Epping in October, which was the beginning of their slide down the table.
Francois Eve got the opening score for Cantabs after just 15 seconds, with Hayward adding the conversion.
When Epping had a player sin-binned, Hayward increased the punishment with a penalty to make it 10-0 after 22 minutes.
Hayward chipped over the defence and won the race to the ball for the second try, but then Epping got an unconverted try to make it 15-5.
The highlight of the match came next when Hayward landed a 50m drop goal from his own half and with the Epping scrum-half sin-binned, it remained 18-5 at half time.
Epping landed a penalty at the start of the second half and then a converted try which saw them close the gap to 18-15.
Francois Eve was yellow carded for Cantabs as Epping got the next try to go in front for the first time at 22-18, and a further touch down saw them extend their lead to 29-18, having scored 24 unanswered points.
As the last quarter approached, Jonny Regan got a pass away for Matt Houlden to touch down for Cantabs, and Hayward converted.
Cantabs had the ascendancy and went back in front when Hayward got his second try of the match, and added the conversion to make it 32-29.
With 10 minutes remaining, a catch and drive from a line-out led to Tom Bailey crossing the line, and Hayward converting.
A yellow card for Drew Tilley and a converted try from Epping made Cantabs sweat, but they held on to make it three wins in a row.
