Shelford will head into the new year with renewed confidence after their 32-6 win at Colchester in National League Three, London & SE.

They have been slow starters so far this season, but that was turned on its head in Essex.

A fine free-flowing move between forwards and backs saw Jamie Beswick touch down, but the visitors reverted to type as they conceded a couple of cheap penalties in kickable distance that allowed Colchester to take a 6-5 lead.

But Colchester’s attacking ambition stopped there and Mike Gillick, deputising at full-back for the injured Simon Hrbek, had an untroubled afternoon as the solid Shelford defence coped fairly easily with everything that Colchester threw at them.

Before half time, Aki Lea touched down and Josh Simmons converted to give Shelford a 12-6 lead.

Simmons, on his first start of the season, landed a penalty for the first points of the second half.

A good three-quarter play saw newboy Tuli Paea get his first try for the club, and then the Shelford scrum started to dominate, with Lea dotting down after successive five-metre set pieces, and Simmons converted.

And Shelford completed their scoring when from another scrum, Lea passed to Charlie Baker, who in turn moved the ball to Paea to get his second try.
