Conversion seals victory for Peacocks

Josh Simmons’ conversion clinched Shelford their best win of the season as they defeated Westcombe Park 17-15 in National League Three, London & SE.

Third-placed Westcombe Park arrived at the Davey Field with the biggest pack in the division, and having beaten Shelford heavily earlier in the season.

Park exerted the early pressure, and they went ahead through a converted try following a rolling maul.

Simmons replied with a penalty, but a second try from the visitors made it 12-3.

Shelford stuck to their guns and as Westcombe Park’s pack began to tire, the hosts got on top and they started to move the visitors around.

Forwards’ coach Gareth Evans has worked hours with front row Joe Winter, Paddy Reilly and Matt Gregerson and that showed as they got the better of their opponents, while Redmond Newberry and Dave Hill were dominating the line-out to get possession to the backs.

The pressure told when fly-half Simmons collected his own chip to score under the posts to make it 12-10.

Westcombe Park responded with a penalty to edge further in front.

But some good running for Shelford from Mike Gillick and Warwick Anderson moved the hosts into the Park 22.

And the pressure finally told when Aki Lea scored untouched under the posts, and Simmons converted to make it 17-15.

Westcombe Park tried to battle back in the last few minutes, but Shelford held out to secure their best win of the season.

After back-to-back home wins, Shelford travel to 12th-placed Southend Saxons this Saturday.
