Bonus-point win is just the ticket

Jamie Beswick produced a starring performance as Shelford won 27-7 against Chichester in National League Three London & SE.

It was a workmanlike performance from Shelford to see off a dogged Chichester side, but Beswick was the central figure, scoring a try and dominating the breakdown all afternoon.

Chichester opened the scoring with a converted try, but that was all the visitors were to take away from the Davey Field.

A dominant scrum on halfway gave centre Tuli Paea the opportunity to break the line and feed Beswick, who outpaced the defence to score.

And Shelford were in front when Paea finished off some relentless pressure from the hosts, and it stayed 10-7 at the break.

After half time Shelford were finding it difficult to convert their opportunities but they eventually added to their tally with an individual effort from Mike Gillick which was converted by Simon Hrbek, who then added a penalty.

Shelford were then seeking a fourth try to earn the bonus point, and that arrived when scrum-half Charlie Baker was cynically dragged down from behind when taking a tap penalty, which gave the referee no choice but to award a penalty try.

It was a good start to the new year for Shelford, but their next game is the daunting prospect of Guernsey away.

And their focus in training will be on the kicking game and kick chase, to ensure that the ball is kicked for territory on more occasions and less energy is expended in the middle of the pitch.
